Getting around Perth

Perth’s public transport network, Transperth, links trains, buses and ferries under one ticket, and the easiest way to pay is simply to tap a contactless bank card or phone. There is no need to buy a ticket or travel card in advance.

  • Pay as you go: tap on and off with Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Fares are capped at the daily rate (around $7), so you never pay more than that in a day.
  • Fares: a short trip (up to 3.2 km) is about $2.40; a Go Anywhere fare (about $3.50) gives unlimited travel on trains, buses and ferries for 3 hours.
  • Free travel: trips that start and end at central stations (City West, Perth Underground/Busport, Elizabeth Quay, McIver, Claisebrook) are free with contactless, and all travel is free on Sundays.
  • Free CAT buses: Perth’s Central Area Transit (CAT) buses are free, with no card needed. The Red, Blue and Yellow CATs loop the city centre, the Blue CAT runs to Kings Park, and the Purple CAT runs to UWA and the QEII Medical Centre (see below).
  • Trains and ferries: suburban lines radiate from Perth Station, and the ferry from Elizabeth Quay to the South Perth foreshore takes about 10 minutes.
  • From the airport: A taxi or rideshare to the city is the easiest option and takes 20–30 minutes. The Airport Line runs from Airport Central (Terminals 1 and 2) to Perth Station in about 18 minutes. For Terminals 3 and 4, take the train to Redcliffe and the 292 shuttle bus.

Getting to the Harry Perkins Institute

The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research is on the QEII Medical Centre campus, about 6 km west of the city centre. The quickest free option from the city centre is the Purple CAT bus (around 20 minutes); a rideshare or taxi takes about 10–15 minutes.

Rideshare and taxi: Vehicle access and drop-off is via Caledenia Crescent, at the front of the Perkins building. Use the drop-off zone outside the front of the Perkins or Visitor Car Park 3 on Caledenia Crescent. To leave the venue by taxi, you can use the Taxi Call Button at Perkins reception; taxis collect from Taxi Stand 7 on Caledenia Crescent (bright yellow signs).
